Rick Simmonds

I joined Phoenix Play in September 2021, leading our product design and manufacturing teams. My journey here began with a passion for creating and making things from timber that’s more than just a piece of equipment but a gateway to discovery, confidence and lifelong stories for every child. 

Before joining Phoenix, I’d always been fascinated by how purposeful design and clever engineering could shape the way people interact with the world around them. Now, I get to see that in action every day, from the first sketch of a concept to seeing it brought to life on the playground. Collaborating with our talented teams across design, manufacture, and sales, I take great pride in ensuring every project is safe, sustainable, and built to last, all while keeping the magic of play at its heart.

No two days are the same when it comes to my day-to-day job and I’m very proud of the Design and Workshop teams here at Phoenix. I can find myself refining a new product idea one moment and the next I’m working alongside our workshop team to bring our school’s vision to life. Every challenge brings something new to learn, and it’s incredibly rewarding to know that our work helps create spaces where children can learn, play and grow.

I’m just as keen to stay active and creative outside of work. I enjoy padel tennis, cycling and woodworking, all great ways to clear my head and keep moving. At home it is full of energy too, thanks to my wife and two children who constantly remind me of the joy and imagination that play brings.
