School Playground Design showing active challenges, roadway and meadow space - Leigh on Mendip School

Planning a playground is an exciting opportunity to transform how children learn, play and connect. When you're focused on school playground planning, a well-considered approach ensures your space delivers real, lasting value.

This playground planning guide walks you through everything you need to know - from first ideas to final installation - helping you build a confident, creative and effective playground project plan.

What are the first steps in planning a new playground?

Every great space starts with a clear vision. When planning a new playground, it’s about understanding your goals and how the space will be used day to day.

Your first playground project steps should include:

  • Defining your objectives (learning, physical activity, social interaction)
  • Identifying who the space is for (age groups, accessibility needs)
  • Reviewing your available space
  • Setting an initial budget

This early stage lays the foundation for a smooth and successful playground design process.

We would recommend at this point that you reach out to our Inhouse Advisor team who can give specialist advice, and can organise a meeting for your local Outdoor Learning Consultant to come to site and support you with the next stage of playground planning.

How do you design a playground for schools?

If you're wondering how to design a school playground, the key is balancing creativity with practicality. A well-designed space should inspire imagination while supporting structured and unstructured play.

Strong playground layout ideas include:

  • Zoning areas for active, quiet and social play
  • Incorporating multi-use equipment to maximise value
  • Designing for flow, ensuring children can move safely between activities
  • Embedding opportunities for learning through play

Great design goes beyond equipment - it creates an environment where children feel engaged, challenged and included.

What factors should be considered in playground planning?

Successful school playground planning considers far more than just what goes into the space.

Your playground planning checklist should include:

  • Safety and compliance
  • Age-appropriate design
  • Inclusivity and accessibility
  • Space optimisation
  • Durability and maintenance
  • Aesthetic and educational value

By reaching out to Phoenix Play and working with our Outdoor Learning Consultants, we can help you to realise your dreams and give practical advice to maximise education and learning opportunities at your setting.

What safety standards apply to playground design?

Safety underpins every stage of the playground design process. It’s about creating an environment where children can explore confidently.

Key safety considerations:

  • Impact-absorbing surfacing such as wetpour or artificial grass, where needed
  • Appropriate free fall heights and zones
  • Safe spacing between equipment
  • Secure boundaries and access points

Working with experienced designers ensures your project meets all relevant standards and regulations.

You can rest assured that all of Phoenix Play’s installations comply with EN1176 guidelines. We also offer an Inspection & Maintenance service to ensure that compliance remains key.

How much should you budget for a playground project?

Playground design and budgeting go hand in hand. Costs can vary widely depending on size, materials and ambition - but careful planning ensures you get the most from your investment.

Budgeting tips:

  • Prioritise essential elements like surfacing and core equipment
  • Plan for additional features such as seating, shade and landscaping
  • Consider phased development if needed
  • Account for ongoing maintenance and inspections

A clear playground project plan keeps everything aligned from start to finish.

Your local Phoenix Play Outdoor Learning Consultant can support your budgeting to make sure every penny counts. Phased plans are often provided to give long term insight into what can be achieved over time.

How long does playground planning take?

Timelines vary, but a typical playground design process includes:

  • Exploring your vision: speak to one of our friendly Inhouse advisor team who will take the time to understand your vision, offer expert guidance and explore how we can help transform your outdoor space.
  • Site visit: a meeting will be set up as soon as practicable. Our Outdoor Learning Consultant will come to site and spend approximately 2 hours with you to understand your needs, measure the space and note access information.
  • Concepts: From there, our visualisation team will be briefed to bring your design to life. This typically takes around 2-3 weeks, and the designs will be sent to you with a detailed cost breakdown. The Outdoor consultants will then liaise with you to make any tweaks that you'd like.
  • Logistics: Once your project has been approved, our Operations team steps in to handle the logistics, and plan your project into our schedule at our earliest appropriate time.
  • Installation: It's then over to our skilled DBS-checked installers to use their incredible carpentry expertise to create your playground transformation.

Building time into your playground project steps helps manage expectations and avoid delays.

Who should be involved in the playground planning process?

The most successful projects are collaborative. Bringing the right people into your playground design process ensures your space meets real needs.

Key stakeholders:

  • School leadership teams
  • Teachers and support staff
  • Pupils - their voice is invaluable
  • Phoenix Play as your expert Playground design consultants

This shared approach leads to more meaningful and effective outcomes.
